Frequently Asked Cataract Questions

All modern cataract surgery uses phacoemulsification to break up and extract the cataract from the eye. Your specialist may use lasers rather than micro-instruments to make the openings in the eye and on the capsule. But they are not used to extract the cataract. It is the surgeon’s preference to use micro instruments or laser.

The human cataract lens once removed does not return. The capsule that holds the human lens and holds the new implant can become frosted over time. This occurs often (10-20%) and is usually what people mean when saying ‘the cataract came back.’

It is not a complication of surgery. The specialist uses a laser to clear the frosting from the capsule as a painless and low-risk outpatient procedure.

You do not need to stop aspirin, warfarin or other antiplatelet therapy before the surgery. If you are on warfarin, the INR will need to be measured 1-3 days before the procedure to ensure it is in the normal therapeutic range for you. Laura Crawley has a lot of experience in operating on patients who take these blood thinning medicines.

Cataract surgery is a planned procedure in the majority of cases and is not an emergency. If you have a fever or are unwell then it is better to defer the surgery until you recover. Infection inside the eye is potentially blinding. The specialist will take all measure to reduce the chances of this occurring.
